TOP FIVE DOG-FRIENDLY BEACHES ON LONG ISLAND

SUN'S OUT, TONGUES OUT!

As summer just begins to pop up across Long Island, the call of the beach is totally irresistible. And because your fur baby goes everywhere you go, its only natural to start planning your dog-friendly beach adventure. You can already see it - playful pawprints in the sand, wind-tousled fur, splishy splash in the retreating waves.  You're definitely going to want to capture these memories!

This guide shares some of the best dog-friendly beaches across Long Island, offering the perfect backdrop for your pup's starring role. It also has essential tips to ensure your beach photo session is as delightful for your furry friend as it is visually stunning.

Picking Your Perfect Beach

  • Smith Point Beach (Fire Island National Seashore): This idyllic paradise offers breathtaking ocean views and miles of sandy shoreline. Bonus: Leash restrictions are lifted after Labor Day, so your pup can truly run wild (responsibly, of course!).
  • Cooper's Beach (Southampton): Known for its pristine white sand and calm waters, Cooper's Beach is a picture-perfect location. Just be aware of leash laws that go into effect after Memorial Day.
  • Main Beach (East Hampton): Another stunner in the Hamptons, Main Beach offers a lively atmosphere and plenty of space for your pup to explore (on leash, of course).
  • Port Jefferson Harbor Beach: This hidden gem on the North Shore boasts beautiful scenery and a relaxed vibe. Perfect for capturing some chill beach bum moments with your pup.
  • Cedar Beach Park (Babylon): Looking for a budget-friendly option? Cedar Beach Park offers a designated dog run right on the beach, along with stunning bay views.

While many Long Island beaches are open to the public, some require a town residency pass for access. These resident passes offer significant cost savings compared to daily beach fees, especially for frequent visits. Be sure to check with your local town or park district for details on obtaining a resident beach pass. Otherwise, there are plenty of free beaches that are open to all and usually only require $8 to park for the day (they will take a credit card!).

Tips for Beachgoers to Get the Perfect Shot

Golden Hour Magic: Early mornings and a couple hours before sunset offer the most flattering light for photos. Plus, your pup (and you!) will be cooler and happier avoiding the direct midday sun.

Dress for Success: Coordinate your outfit with your pup's fur color for some extra aesthetic points. Think breezy sundresses for you and a cute bandana for your furry friend. Or if you're really going all out, work with a styling service to strike the perfect breezy beach, camera-ready look.

Beach Essentials: Don't forget the pup essentials! Pack plenty of water, a portable water bowl, treats for good behavior, and some doggy waste bags (leave no trace!).

Remember the Rules: Always check specific leash laws and beach regulations before your visit. Some beaches have designated dog areas, restrictions from Memorial Day to Labor Day, or off limit areas for breeding and baby endangered birds.

Now you're all set to capture some unforgettable memories with your precious pup! Now get out there, soak up the sun, and let those beachy vibes flow!
